Here are Brimbleworth Gundogs we pride ourselves on breeding and rearing puppies like no other! Check out what I do at each milestone and why below;
Day 0 - 16: Early Nuerological Stimulation and advanced handling
Week 2 - 3: Socialisation begins in the whelping box and potty training starts
Week 4 - 5:
Week 6 - 7:
Week 8 - 9:
Day 0 - 16
Right from day one puppies are weighed and handled multiple times per day, getting them used every part of their body being touched.
From day 3 until day 16 I follow a scientific protocol called Early Neurological Stimulation which stimulates the puppy's neurological system by challenging it to respond earlier than it would normally be expected to. The result will later aid the puppy's performance and health. E.N.S. creates dogs with a greater tolerance to stress, greater resistance to disease, more neural pathways, better nerve ending connections and stronger heartbeats.
The Early Neurological Stimulation Protocol consists of 5 stimulating exercises to be done to each individual puppy every day. To see the scientific paper on Early Neurological Stimulation written by Dr. Carmen Battaglia of Breeding Better Dogs, click on the PDF below.
The stimulating exercises are as follows;
1. Tactical stimulation (between toes)
2. Head held erect
3. Head pointed down
4. Supine position
5. Thermal stimulation.
Week 2 - 3
The 'Transitional Period', where puppies eyes start to open and they first hear a sound, has begun! This is a very sensitive time as they are just starting to become aware of their surroundings so we are very careful in what we do with them at this fragile stage. Each day new objects are added to the whelping box as well as introducing the other family dogs and a variety of household sounds.
This is also when the puppy's natural instinct to keep their nest clean starts to kick in, so a wood pellet litter tray is introduced to being the process of toilet training.
